The case for outsourced IT support

When outsourcing IT support genuinely beats hiring, what to insist on in the arrangement, and the warning signs of a bad provider.

Outsourced IT support is sold on cost. Cost is rarely the real reason it works. The real reason is coverage: one internal person cannot be expert in networking, security, email, backup and your finance system simultaneously — and cannot be on holiday either.

When outsourcing genuinely wins

You need breadth more than depth. Most organisations under a couple of hundred people need a lot of different skills occasionally, rather than one skill constantly.

Continuity matters. A team does not resign, take annual leave, or take undocumented knowledge with it.

Your systems are specialised. If your finance or trading platform is business-critical, you want support from people who understand the platform, not just the hardware it runs on.

What to insist on

A named escalation path. Not a queue. You should know who picks it up when the first line cannot resolve it.

Someone who knows your environment. Generic support means explaining your setup every time you call. That is where the real delay lives.

Response commitments you can hold them to, with evidence — not a target mentioned in a sales meeting.

Clarity on what is included. Ambiguity here surfaces at the worst possible moment.

The warning signs

A provider who only appears when something breaks is a repair service, not support. The value is in the things that quietly do not happen: the patch applied before the exploit, the backup verified before it is needed, the disk replaced before it fails.

Be wary, too, of anyone who cannot explain a fix in language you understand. It usually means they cannot explain it at all.

What we do
